In her otherwise fairly good review of my CD, Siobhan Long of Hot Press described this track as "as execrable piece of writing that might have come out of any writing workshop" and stated that it should never have seen the light of day. I wrote it or dictated it into my Dictaphone on waking with the memory of a dream I'd had two weeks earlier. The other three dreams appear in reverse chronological order and are all actual dreams I had over a period of about ten years. It was written in as long as it took to say it and when I read it at the time of recording it was with the intention of later experimenting with various musical instruments over the voice.
Dreams (revealing?) poem
I had a dream last night and your mouth was right where it used to be
And not round the side where Emily's was
Not like Picasso and my room was like a late VanGough
It was different but the same, familiar but not the way it was before
Before, before, before I walked out the door
It was higgeldy piggeldy head over heels
Doctor please tell me what that reveals
Am I getting better am I getting worse
Yeah I'll come back next week of course
I had a dream of two motorbikes, a red and a white
And after we'd raced round the block, you said I might
Choose one to travel on and I chose the red
Six months later our love was dead
And in a dream when I fell off the wall
And my raincoat like a parachute slowed down my fall
When I landed frustration was the worst thing of all
'cause I knew you wouldn't believe my close call
It was higgeldy piggeldy head over heels
Doctor please tell me what that reveals
Am I getting better am I getting worse
Yeah I'll come back next week of course
And in a dream I found myself talking to Cohen
About the famous blue raincoat I wanted to know
If Johnny Ray was the subject of one of my favourite songs
Still don't know where that idea came from
But he wasn't
