When I came back from my trip to Scotland with my first two songs written, I thought that if I didn't write anymore I could be miss-classified as a Scottish songwriter and thought that I'd better write at least three in Ireland. I also was returning to a place that I had only been living in for three months and while I'd settled in really well I was worried that I'd return to a place where I didn't belong and it was this that started "Out in the Cold". I had two verses for a couple of weeks but didn't know where it was going and left it alone. I wrote the last three verses in a bar in Kinvara over a pot of tea and it was my first Irish song.
Out in the Cold
Out in the cold, out in the cold
With nothing to hold onto but your freedom
And that's worth a lot, when it's all that you've got
And you're on your own and out in the cold
Out in the cold, it's a new situation
A whole new station, an adventure beginning
Are you losing or winning? Standing or falling?
Walking or crawling? Out in the cold
Out in the cold, security failed you
You didn't know what ailed you for such a long time
And when you felt fine you left your safety net
And went out on your own, out in the cold
Out in the cold, is it a curse or a blessing?
Depends on how you look at it. Will you give up your soul?
Will you be bought or sold or do you want to stay whole
When you're on your own and out in the cold
Out in the cold, if you follow your heart
You'll find a new start and companions in tune
With the beat that you hear there and reasons to be
And a fire to warm you, bring you in from the cold
