Ten days after writing track 16, still in Scotland, up north staying at
Rob Ellen's house in Nairne, I wrote this the day after my first ever Kareoke
experience. Trevor, who came back to the house with us helped out with the
second verse and the chorus.
Rob's Medicine Music was managing two acts at the time; Martin Stevenson
and Paul Lambe and the Kingsnakes.
The Day the Musick Died
We used to go out on a Friday night, get totally pissed and sing like shite
And me and me mates thought that it was all right and we'd do it every week
There was a man with a sort of a record machine, a little TV and on the
screen
Was every word of every song so we'd never get it wrong
Oh yeah that was Kareoke
And oh yeah the place was smoky
But on a Friday night well it seemed so right
To sing like Elvis in Heartbreak Hotel
While Patsy
fell to pieces
There was Johnny Preston with his Running Bear and Madonna like a virgin
there
And the guy with the funny purple hair sang I saw her standing there
And while Frankie did it his way the Stones refused to fade away
Chuck couldn't get his belt undone and Delilah had another one
Oh yeah that was Kareoke
And oh yeah the place was smoky
But on a Friday night well it seemed so right
To sing like Elvis in Heartbreak Hotel
While Patsy
fell to pieces
But one Friday night when we went along to do our stuff and sing our song
No record machine and no TV and standing where they used to be
Was a keyboard, drums and some guitars and now us bums can be the stars
no more
The day
..Kareoke died
Oh yeah that was Kareoke
And oh yeah the place was smoky
But on a Friday night well it seemed so right
To sing like Elvis in his blue suede shoes
While Patsy
went Crazy
Now Friday nights are kinda tame, the new owner's the one to blame
Live bands play stuff we've never heard, sometimes we can't under stand
a word
We still go there but it's not the same, still get pissed but it's such
a shame
No mike no telly no record machine, but coloured light blue red and green.
Martin Stevenson, without the Daintees, Paul Lambe's Kingsnakes sounding
faintly
Like the Stones or some forgotten band way back in Kareokeland
Oh yeah that was Kareoke
And oh yeah the place was smoky
But on a Friday night well it seemed so right
To sing like Elvis in Heartbreak Hotel
While Patsy
fell to pieces
I fall to pieces oh yeah
