Last night I made a love song, the sweetest I ever heard
Just played it straight off the guitar and sang just like a bird
Big Bob was there when I played it, with tears of joy in his eyes,
Put his head down and wept on the table and ya know Big Bob never cries.
It was sort of a love gone wrong song that worked out fine in the end
But the batteries were dead in the recorder I'd borrowed from a friend
And I woulda wrote down that love song, apart from a minor third
Not a single note outta place and not a superfluous word

But I couldn't find a pencil and I couldn't find a pen

It was tender poignant and moving, Bob said it was hope for mankind
I played it nine or ten times over, Bob said that he didn't mind
And the haunting melody lingered, like nothing I'd heard before
While my left hand dextrously fingered like it already knew the score
And just before sleep over came us I said goodnight to big B
Who said " make sure that I get me a copy on vhynl tape or C D
Old Bob said it'd drive women crazy and make me incredibly rich
But when I woke from a satisfied slumber I'd forgotten the son of a bitch

I'll track down that song in my subconscious 'cause it'll keep my mind off you
